New Glarus Brewing Co. may only distribute in Wisconsin, but that didn’t prevent the Green County-based company from moving up the list of the top brewers in the country.

In 2012, New Glarus produced about 126,000 barrels of its popular Spotted Cow and other beers, a 10.4 percent increase over 2011. That ranked the brewery owned by Deb and Dan Carey 17th in the country among craft brewers, up two spots from its No. 19 ranking in 2011 production, according to the Colorado-based Brewers Association.

Among all brewing companies, a list that includes top-ranked Anheuser-Busch and No. 2 MillerCoors, New Glarus ranked 26th, up from No. 28 in 2011. Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe, which is not classified as a craft brewery by the Brewers Association, moved up three spots in the overall list to 11th-largest beer producer in the country.

Stevens Point Brewery, the only other Wisconsin company to make the lists, slipped in the rankings despite its third expansion project in three years in 2012. Among craft brewers, the company went from 31st in 2011 production to 35th in 2012. Among all beer companies, Point dropped from 43rd to 46th place. It produced 120,000 barrels of beer in 2012, in the midst of its fourth expansion in four years to increase production to 150,000 barrels, but much of that beer was produced for other companies and doesn’t count in the Brewers Association rankings.

Boston Beer Co., the Boston-based maker of Samuel Adams, was the top craft brewing company in the country. It made 2.7 million barrels of beer in 2012, a 10 percent increase over 2011, according to the company.

Wisconsin is home to 88 operating breweries and brewpubs with several more in the planning or construction phase. The new entries in the coming year include Wisconsin Brewing Co. in Verona and Next Door Brewing Co., 2439 Atwood Ave., Madison.
